Delhi, an ancient site, finds mention in Indian epic Mahabharata in the name of Indraprastha. But Delhi as we know it is primarily a Mughal creation. The earliest reference to Delhi is to the citadel of Lal Kot and the city of Dhilika (c.1052 AD). The Chauhans won it during 1153-64 AD, establishing the first proper city here - Qila Rai Pithora. A succession of rulers and cities followed- Qutub, Siri, Tughlaqbad, Jahanpanah, Firozabad and Dinpanah. Shahjahanabad is the eight historic city of Delhi and the only one inhabited even today. The British built New Delhi in the early 20th century. Designed by the British architect Edwin Lutyens, it was to be a symbol of the powerful British Empire.

Over 1444 marble pillars, carved in exquisite detail and differently, support the temple. All the statues face one or the other statue. The image faces all four cardinal directions.

The folks there wear nice and lovely multihued costumes. Another one of the unique features of the culture of Jodhpur, Rajasthan is the colorful turbans worn by men. The graceful palaces, forts and temples strewn throughout the city bring alive the historic grandeur of this city. Lending a romantic aura to Jodhpur, are its exquisite handicrafts, folk dances, folk music and the brightly attired people.

The westernmost frontier city of Rajasthan, bordering Pakistan, Jaisalmer, the "Golden City of Rajasthan", is known for being amidst the Thar Desert. Desert Safari in the sand dunes of Jaisalmer is an unforgettable experience. The city is dominated by the Jaisalmer Fort. Unlike most forts in India, the Jaisalmer Fort is a living fort. There are shops, hotels, age old havelis (mansions) inside the fort area. Below the fort are several magnificent havelis with intricate stone carving. Short trips give a glimpse of the desert to the tourists.

Osian, a small but historically important town near Jodhpur, is popularly called as ‘Khajuraho of Rajasthan’. Home to more than 100 temples of ancient era, Osian had been a centre of culture and religious activities during the rule of Pratihara dynasty. Though many ancient shrines have crumbled due to ravages of the time and Islamic invaders but still it boasts of having 18 shrines the sects of Hindus and Jains, unfolding the royal legacy of past. Amongst these temples, Surya (Sun) Temple, Harihara Temple, Sachiya Mata Temple and a Jain temple dedicated to Lord Mahavira get the prime importance. Located about 65 kms from Jodhpur, Osian is regarded as a prominent pilgrimage site for Oswal Jain community. Ravages of the time have destroyed these temples to an extent, still their charm attract people to visit the ancient city of Ossian.

Presently a small hamlet of Nagaur district of Rajasthan, Khimsar, during its days of glory in the past, used to be a ‘thikana’ or a fiefdom and paid allegiance to the kingdom of Mewar. Situated about 100 kms away from Jodhpur, Khimsar is an oasis in the very middle of harsh desert and offers an opportunity to a tourist to have first hand feel of desert lifestyle in the villages. Spread in 11 acres of land, Khimsar Fort, now turned into a luxury heritage hotel, is the prime tourist attraction of Khimsar. Pushkar, one of the holiest Hindu pilgrimages, is a major tourist destination of Rajasthan. Situated about 12 kms from Ajmer, Pushkar is known for the only temple of Lord Brahma, the creator god and one of the Hindu Trinity- Brahma, Vishnu Mahesh. Other than Brahma temple, more than 500 temples of other gods and goddesses and the Holy Pushkar Lake surrounded by 52 bathing ghats, where people take a dip with deep religious faith, are major tourist attractions. But among foreign tourists, Pushkar holds tremendous prominence for Pushkar Fair. Every year in the month of "Kartik", (October or November, it depends on lunar calendar), Pushkar Fair takes place from 7th moon and finishes on full moon (Purnima). This annual event is an unforgettable colorful festival when thousands of Cattles, Camels, Horses and other animals are brought here from nearby & far villages for trading during first half and countless people in their colorful attire gathers in second half. It is really once in a life time experience that you would certainly like to repeat.

Jaipur, the capital city of Rajasthan, has been laid according to the conventional nine-grid pattern that astrologers believe to be lucky, and which has been recommended in the ancient Indian treatise on architecture. Jaipur has much to offer visitors — everything from pageants and festivals to extraordinarily clad people, a wealth of handicrafts, a royal legacy of palaces, and sightseeing — that will occupy their time. Jaipur is also known as ‘Pink City’ and famous for magnificent monuments like Amber Fort, Jaigarh Fort, Nahargarh Fort, Jal Mahal, City Palace, Jantar Mantar, Hawa Mahal, Galta Ji, Birla Temple, Albert Hall etc. Being almost equidistant from Delhi and Agra, Jaipur along with these two cities form a Golden Triangle circuit.

Fatehpur Sikri

Fatehpur Sikri, a deserted town at the outskirts of Agra city (37 kms), was established by Mughal ruler Akbar in 1569. Several historians are of the view that Fatehpur Sikri was founded to make it capital of Mughal Empire. As per these historians, Fatehpur Sikri served as Mughal capital during 1571-1585 AD. But historical facts belie this theory. Mughal capital actually had never been shifted to Fatehpur Sikri, though many officials had been transferred there. But due to paucity of potable and drinking water, Fatehpur Sikri could not be inhabited on full scale.

Fatehpur Sikri, an elaborate attempt of a planned city during medieval era, is a constellation of various palatial, religious and votive monuments, constructed primarily of red sandstone. The medieval era town complex comprises several magnificent buildings which are in well preserved condition. The prominent monuments are Buland Darwaja, Jama Masjid, Panch Mahal, Birbal Mahal, Jodha Bai Palace & Salim Chisti Dargah.

Agra finds its mention in epic of Mahabharata as ‘Agravana’. Agra is traditionally and culturally part of Brijbhumi, associated with legendary Lord Krishna. Strategically located on the banks of river Yamuna, the city of Agra has seen many upheavals due to intermittent attacks of the invaders to take control of it. Agra remained under control of the Rajputs, the Muslims, the Marathas and the British. Though the influences of these regimes are quite visible in art, architecture and culture of the city but the Mughal impact is more pronounced, especially in old Agra. Now-a-days, Agra has been synonymous with Taj Mahal from tourism perspective. Taj Mahal can easily be termed as a feather in the cap of India, particularly Agra, which also possesses the most precious jewel in the country’s crown the “Taj Mahal”. Sikander Lodhi, Babur, Humayun, Akbar, Jahangir and Shahjahan ruled with Agra as capital of their kingdoms. Babur was the first Mughal king who built first Islamic monument in Agra i.e. Gul-e-Afgaan or the Aram Bag -a planned garden. During the rule of Akbar, famous monuments of Agra, Fatehpur Sikri and Agra Fort, were constructed. Sikandara and It-mad-ud-Daula are the famous buildings of Jahangiri period. World renowned Taj Mahal, built by Shah Jahan in fond memory of Mumtaj Mahal, is now one of the ‘Seven Wonders of the World’. Agra is also known for its fabulous handicrafts, made of marble and soft-stone inlay work. Agra's major handicraft products besides inlay work are: leather-ware, brassware, carpets, jewellery and embroidery work.
